ANTICHRIST
There are many false Christs (Matthew 24:5) and many antichrists (1 John 2:18), but in the future there will be one antichrist who will rule during the great tribulation (see TRIBULATION). Prophetically he is referred to as the “beast” (Revelation 13:1) and the “man of sin” (2 Thessalonians 2:3). The “spirit of antichrist” (I John 4:3) has been in the world from at least the days of the apostles and fights the work of God. He will take power by controlling three nations who are united in a group of ten. When the three fall to him, then the other seven will follow (Daniel 7:8, 20, 24).
He will then go after the world (Revelation 13:3, 7). He will come to power by flatteries (Daniel 11:32–34), a false peace (Revelation 6:2; Daniel 8:25, 11:22; 1 Thessalonians 5:3), and by working with a false religious system (Revelation 17:6–7). He is a deceiver (Matthew 24:4–5, 23–27; 2 Corinthians 11:14–15) and an arrogant blasphemer (Revelation13:5–6). He will proclaim himself as God (2 Thessalonians 2:4–11), and he will be very wise and have a “fierce countenance” (Daniel 8:23, 7:20).
He receives his authority from the devil and gets the attention of the world by “lying miracles” and a false resurrection (2 Thessalonians 2:9 and Revelation 13:2–4). But he will meet his end and be cast into the “lake of fire” (Revelation 19:20). He is believed to be a gentile (non-Jew) because he comes from the “sea” (Revelation 13:1), which in prophecy represents the gentile nations (Revelation 17:15). He has a false prophet who is believed to be a Jew, as he will come from the “earth” (Revelation 13:11; see MARK OF THE BEAST; see ALIENS IN REVELATION, which is the second to the last button).
