HIGH PRIEST
The first high priest was Aaron, the brother of Moses. The high priest would go into the tabernacle, and later the temple of God, to offer up blood sacrifices on behalf of God’s people. Today a Christian’s body is the temple of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 6:19), and Christ is our high priest (Hebrews 4:14). He has entered the true tabernacle in heaven and offered up His own blood for a sacrifice for our sins (Hebrews 8:2, 9:11–12).
Because Christ was the “son of man” through Mary and suffered in His body, He understands how we feel, and because He is the “Son of God” by His heavenly Father, He has the power to help us and save us. We become children of God by faith in Christ Jesus (Galatians 3:26) and have access to the throne of heaven by praying in the name of Jesus Christ. “Seeing then that we have a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession. For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin. Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need” (Hebrews 4:14–16). We do not need an earthly priest to get close to God, but we need our high priest, Jesus Christ. Many people have seen the picture of the late President Kennedy sitting in the Oval Office at the White House, his little son crawling under his desk. Senators and generals needed permission to enter that room, but not the president’s children. So we, as children of God, can “come boldly” to God’s “throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.”
