PRAISE
“O thou that inhabitest the praises of Israel” (Psalm 22:3b).
“Praise ye the Lord: for it is good to sing praises unto our God; for it is pleasant; and praise is comely” (Psalm 147:1). Praise in the Bible is mentioned more than 300 times.
Everyone is to praise the Lord: “Let the people praise thee, O God; let all the people praise thee” (Psalm 67:3, 5).
One may be poor and not able to give financially to the Lord, but he can “bring the sacrifice of praise into the house of the Lord” (Jeremiah 33:11; 17:26). “Take with you words, and turn to the Lord: say unto him, Take away all iniquity, and receive us graciously: so will we render the calves of our lips” (Hosea 14:2). “By him therefore let us offer the sacrifice of praise to God continually, that is, the fruit of our lips giving thanks to his name” (Hebrews 13:15).
Things to praise the Lord for:
“I will praise the Lord according to his righteousness” (Psalm 7:17).
“I will praise thee, O Lord, with my whole heart; I will shew forth all thy marvellous works” (Psalm 9:1).
“Be thou exalted, Lord, in thine own strength: so will we sing and praise thy power”
(Psalm 21:13).
“…praised the Lord, saying, For he is good; for his mercy endureth for ever” (2
Chronicles 5:13).
“And when he was come nigh, even now at the descent of the mount of Olives, the whole multitude of the disciples began to rejoice and praise God with a loud voice for all the mighty works that they had seen” (Luke 19:37).
“In God will I praise his word: in the Lord will I praise his word” (Psalm 56:10).
“Because thy lovingkindness is better than life, my lips shall praise thee” (Psalm 63:3).
“Oh that men would praise the Lord for his goodness, and for his wonderful works to the children of men!” (Read all of Psalm 107, which declares the many ways God deliverers us from our problems.)
For our children and families. “He maketh the barren woman to keep house, and to be a joyful mother of children. Praise ye the Lord” (Psalm 113:9).
For our miraculous bodies and its five senses of sight, smell, hearing, taste, and touch. “I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvellous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well” (Psalm 139:14).
For His wisdom. “I thank thee, and praise thee, O thou God of my fathers, who hast given me wisdom and might, and hast made known unto me now what we desired of thee: for thou hast now made known unto us the king’s matter” (Daniel 2:23).
When you are healed. “And his mouth was opened immediately, and his tongue loosed, and he spake, and praised God” (Luke 1:64; also see Luke 18:43).
How can we show His praises?
When we sing. “Sing praises to God, sing praises: sing praises unto our King, sing praises” (Psalm 47:6; also see Judges 5:3.)
When play musical instruments. “Praise him with the sound of the trumpet: praise him with the psaltery and harp. Praise him with the timbrel and dance: praise him with stringed instruments and organs. Praise him upon the loud cymbals: praise him upon the high sounding cymbals” (Psalm 150:3–5; also see Psalm 33:2). “Four thousand praised the Lord with the instruments which I made, said David, to praise therewith” (1 Chronicles 23:5).
In trials. “That the trial of your faith, being much more precious than of gold that perisheth, though it be tried with fire, might be found unto praise and honour and glory at the appearing of Jesus Christ” (1 Peter 1:7).
When we give testimony. “Oh that men would praise the Lord for his goodness, and for his wonderful works to the children of men! Let them exalt him also in the congregation of the people, and praise him in the assembly of the elders” (Psalm 107:31–32).
What happens when we praise the Lord?
God is glorified. “Whoso offereth praise glorifieth me” (Psalm 50:23).
We receive the peace of God. “Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things. Those things, which ye have both learned, and received, and heard, and seen in me, do: and the God of peace shall be with you” (Philippians 4:8–9).
Our enemies can be defeated. “And when he had consulted with the people, he appointed singers unto the Lord, and that should praise the beauty of holiness, as they went out before the army, and to say, Praise the Lord; for his mercy endureth for ever. And when they began to sing and to praise, the Lord set ambushments against the children of Ammon, Moab, and mount Seir, which were come against Judah; and they were smitten” (2 Chronicles 20:21–22). “I will call upon the Lord, who is worthy to be praised: so shall I be saved from mine enemies” (Psalm 18:3; also see 2 Samuel 22:4).
The lost can receive faith. “And he hath put a new song in my mouth, even praise unto our God: many shall see it, and fear, and shall trust in the Lord” (Psalm 40:3).
The discouraged will be encouraged. “Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted in me? hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise him for the help of his countenance” (Psalm 42:5,11).
Our Creator is worthy of praise! Our holy God desires, likes, and inhabits our praise. Men and the devil also want the praise that belongs to God (Acts 12:22–23; Matthew 4:9). However, there is a place to praise those who have done a good job and been faithful (1 Corinthians 11:2, 16:17–18).
“But thou art holy, O thou that inhabitest the praises of Israel” (Psalm 22:3). “It came even to pass, as the trumpeters and singers were as one, to make one sound to be heard in praising and thanking the Lord; and when they lifted up their voice with the trumpets and cymbals and instruments of musick, and praised the Lord, saying, For he is good; for his mercy endureth for ever: that then the house was filled with a cloud, even the house of the Lord” (2 Chronicles 5:13). “But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light” (1 Peter 2:9).
When should we praise the Lord?
“I will bless the Lord at all times: his praise shall continually be in my mouth” (Psalm 34:1).
“Seven times a day do I praise thee because of thy righteous judgments” (Psalm 119:164).
“From the rising of the sun unto the going down of the same the Lord’s name is to be praised” (Psalm 113:3).
“I will sing unto the Lord as long as I live: I will sing praise to my God while I have my being” (Psalm 104:33).
Where should we praise the Lord? Pray for wisdom on how and the appropriate time to praise Him. Here are biblical examples:
In jail. “And at midnight Paul and Silas prayed, and sang praises unto God: and the prisoners heard them” (Acts 16:25).
Going to church. “Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise: be thankful unto him, and bless his name” (Psalm 100:4).
In God’s house. “Saying, I will declare thy name unto my brethren, in the midst of the church will I sing praise unto thee” (Hebrews 2:12).
When given opportunities. “I will greatly praise the Lord with my mouth; yea, I will praise him among the multitude” (Psalm 109:30).
In front of the lost. “Therefore I will give thanks unto thee, O Lord, among the heathen, and I will sing praises unto thy name” (2 Samuel 22:50).
But not to graven images. “I am the Lord: that is my name: and my glory will I not give to another, neither my praise to graven images” (Isaiah 42:8). We should all sincerely praise the Lord. “Praise ye the Lord. Praise God in his sanctuary: praise him in the firmament of his power. Praise him for his mighty acts: praise him according to his excellent greatness. Praise him with the sound of the trumpet: praise him with the psaltery and harp. Praise him with the timbrel and dance: praise him with stringed instruments and organs. Praise him upon the loud cymbals: praise him upon the high sounding cymbals. Let every thing that hath breath praise the Lord. Praise ye the Lord” (Psalm 150:1–6).
