WAR
“Thou shalt not kill.” This verse from the Ten Commandments has been used by some to teach that Christians should not go to war, but the Bible clearly teaches both capital punishment (see CAPITAL PUNISHMENT) and that there is “a time of war” (Ecclesiastes 3:8). The Bible says, “Blessed are the peacemakers.” Amen. And it is easier to get into a war than it is to get out of it, but when we cannot have peace, then the main purpose of our government is to protect us (Romans 13:3–6). The Bible is full of stories such as David versus Goliath or Samson killing the Philistines, which he did when “the Spirit of the Lord came mightily upon him” (Judges 15:14–16). It was by faith believers went to war: “Who through faith subdued kingdoms…out of weakness were made strong, waxed valiant in fight, turned to flight the armies of the aliens” (Hebrews 11:33–34). God does not sin and He sometimes fights in wars. One of the most common names for God is the “Lord of hosts” (hosts = “armies,” used 245 times in the Bible), and is why the Bible said, “The Lord is a man of war” (Exodus 15:3). “For there fell down many slain, because the war was of God” (1 Chronicles 5:22).
