LOVE
“God is love” (1 John 4:16), and the Bible teaches that love is the greatest of all. (Sometimes in the Bible the word love is translated “charity.”) “And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity” (1 Corinthians 13:13).
Some have the mistaken idea that love is only a feeling, but though love has feelings, it is a “commandment” in the Bible. “Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment” (Matthew 22:37–38). Some husbands and wives have thought that because they no longer have love for each other, that they should leave. No, they should repent; it is a command: “That they may teach the young women to be sober, to love their husbands, to love their children” (Titus 2:4). “Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it” (Ephesians 5:25). “Husbands, love your wives, and be not bitter against them” (Colossians 3:19).
God loves you. “Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins” (1 John 4:10). “Thy lovingkindness is better than life” (Psalm 63:3). “Cause me to hear thy lovingkindness in the morning” (Psalm 143:8). “I have loved thee with an everlasting love: therefore with lovingkindness have I drawn thee” (Jeremiah 31:3). “Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends” (John 15:13). “He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love” (1 John 4:8). There are dozens of such verses in the Bible.
